Selecting the right mobile computer, barcode scanner, or point-of-sale terminal is only part of a successful deployment. Hardware can meet every technical requirement and still fit poorly into the way employees actually work.
Consider two employees using similar handheld equipment. One may scan continuously from a fixed workstation. Another may cover a large facility and use the equipment only at certain points. A retail associate may move between inventory, customer service, and checkout, while a restaurant employee may carry a payment terminal between tables.
Before organizations standardize how equipment is carried, positioned, or stored, three factors deserve attention: task frequency, employee movement, and required access.
These decisions are easier to make before a rollout than after the same configuration has been deployed across multiple teams or locations.
